to lauren, julie, jennifer, roula, lisette, alex... [14 Sep 2005|01:20am]
this comes a bit late, but it only just occurred to me to come look on livejournal (i always forget about it :o(). i just wanted to say that my thoughts have been with you over the past two weeks, and will continue to be so in the coming ones. i feel that it would trivialize the situation and my feelings as well as yours to say too much right now. so i will just update you on my relatives... my grandmother was already in boulder, colorado, when katrina hit... my aunt molly gave birth to twin baby boys - grant and mcneil - and she went to be with her and the babies. molly has asked me to be grant's godmother. my uncle carl went to new orleans and brought my grandfather back to texas with him. my aunt sandy and uncle mcneil and their children (katherine and john) went to baton rouge. sandy is working at the oschner hospital there. they have gotten an apartment and put katherine and john into school there... katherine is at st. josephs, where my another cousin, jessica, graduated. i don't know where john is in school. my grandparents arrived in pensacola yesterday, and will be staying with my mom for an indefinite period of time. i think that all of my aunts and uncles will probably advise them not to move back to n.o. at all. my mom is engaged now to her longtime boyfriend, erik. garrecht and beau both just started college - garrecht at furman in north carolina and beau at the university of central florida in orlando. garrecht hurt his foot on one of the first days of school, and now he has to get surgery! (he tore the tendon to his fourth toe). life in tennessee goes on as usual.

Well, it's been ages, but here I am - I'm just going to skip excuses and mention what I have been up to...

So big bad Hurricane Ivan hit Pensacola pretty much dead on. I still haven't been home, and I won't get to go until Christmas break, but my dad sent me a whole CDR of pictures. Our beach house (which I know you haven't seen yet) got some significant damage, but much less that many of the other houses on the beach. The water level rose 30 feet, so the whole island was under water. The water filled up the first floor and even went into the second. The sand from all of the dunes got mixed around and evened out, so now there are no more dunes, but lots of things got filled with sand... I saw pictures of peoples houses where only a space of 2 feet was left between the sand and the ceiling of the garage, cars filled up with sand, and the roads had to be dug out. People are still only allowed out to their houses during day light hours (to try to curb looting), and it seems like the whole city is pretty devastated. Our house in town (the one you guys have been to) also did very well compared to the rest of the neighborhood. Some of the roof got blown off and one of the trees broke in half, but mostly things will be reparable with a little time. They just got the phone line back two days ago!!

Anyway, to be honest, I am up here in Tennessee and that is all pretty removed from me. I just got back from a 6 day trip to the CMJ Music Marathon in New York City w/ the radio station. Check out www.wuts913.com, and there are old pictures under "gallery" and newer pictures under "about" of the station staff (and me!!). New York was so much fun... the food, the subway, the sights. I went to the Museum of Natural History (where the dinosaur bones and stuff are) and stayed until they closed the building! I also went to Chinatown and got a fake Chanel purse, hehehe, which the lady who swiped my card at the cafeteria tonight got very excited about. I really like New York a lot. I am really interested in Columbia Medical School, so perhaps I will be living there soon!

About medical school... I got my MCAT scores, and I did really well. I studied all summer long, so I was well prepared. What you guys will enjoy though is... I talked to Maw Maw tonight, and apparently she ran into Mrs. Howard at a Sacred Heart function this weekend, and wellll.... Brie got a 34 on the MCAT and I got a 38. Hehehehehehehe. 34 is still a really good score, though, and Brie will certainly get into any medical school she wants to with that, so it is all cool. But I still kicked her butt. I wonder what Emily is up to these days??

Does anyone know what Lauren Lebon is up to? Someone was talking about MIT the other day, and I mentioned how my friend from highschool goes there. They asked me what her major was, and I got a little embarassed because I had just been talking about how she was "my friend" and I had no idea.

Also about medical school... I think I will probably apply to Tulane, too... maybe I will end up be in N.O. Julie and Lisette, will you still be there in two years? And Lauren, Jennifer, Roula, do you know if you will be moving back after SCAD, LSU, Emory?

One more thing... I will be in New Orleans for Thanksgiving. Whoever will be there, let me know. My grandparents are having their 50th Wedding Anniversary Celebration, so there will be lots of family stuff to attend, but I will certainly be coming to hang out with you kids... AAAAND I will have my sugar (Cornel) with me, so you will all get to meet him. Gotta throw in a picture...

I hope that works.

Pictures, pictures! Here is me right after I finished the MCAT back in August...

I don't have any pictures from Pensacola online, but here is Cornel's apartment in Atlanta, which flooded from all of the rain from Ivan...

Okay, I will try to keep in touch on the way to Thanksgiving. I love you guys! I always end these like I'm signing a letter.

gantt [21 Feb 2003|05:52pm]
guys... i just wanted to let everyone know that the date for my dad's house birthday party deal is going to be the weekend of may 17th. i said the weekend of the 24th earlier, but it turns out that is memorial day weekend, so the lake will be packed. it is more fun when it is pretty much just us, you know. so i hope everyone can come. i have no idea how everybody will get there, but i'm sure if we start planning now we can work it out. both meghans should be there and some sewanee kids, too, and, hopefully, all the new orleans ladies! let me know if you think you can come.

hey babies!! [29 Nov 2002|11:14am]
happy thanksgiving, everyone. let's see... i am in memphis right now at my grandparents. not too amazing, but i think i am going to get a couple of their old records (jimi hendrix experience smash hits, simon and gar*fuck*el (as miss chris would say) sound of silence, and billy joel - piano man). AND i'm going thrift store shopping today w/ brother and cousins. i really need some clothes because there are no thrift stores near sewanee.

anyway...

the main reason for me posting is to see what everyone's plans for christmas break are. my family is going on a cruise that leaves out of new orleans on dec 29. it gets back on jan 5. i am going to stay in new orleans from the 5th until the 10th of january. will any of you babies be in town then? i hope so.

so. i'm sure you guys have already discussed your plans for break, but i would really appreciate it if you could reply and let me know what everyone is doing. i can't wait to be in new orleans... just a month or so.

love you guys

[07 Oct 2002|12:54pm]
yo ladies! guess what i did this weekend... took some sewanee kids down to the lake house in gantt. leighton, kiel, and catherine. we bought lots of good beer - corona, shiner bock, and rolling rock, haha, and a 40 of miller high life - and drove down there friday afternoon/night. we stopped at this place called unclaimed baggage in scottsboro, alabama. see, when people leave stuff on planes it goes to this store and they sell it. i got some climbing shoes for $10, some clothes, and a pixies cd. it was awesome. on saturday we rode jetskis, wakeboarded/skiied, and then went to eat at the mexican restaurant. it was the best night... we went back to the lake house (just us, no dad), smoked a joint (my first time since my birthday in june), watched wet hot american summer (which is the funniest movie, and everyone should see it), smoked another joint, then sat on the fancy antique couch and shot with a paintball gun at cans on the porch railing. hehehe, it was beautiful.

right. so we got back to sewanee at 8:30 last night and i had to unpack and do all the work i *didn't* do this weekend. my mom drove up to see me while we were there and brought me lots of food. she gave me a bunch of these things called "bowl appetit" which are really good and i would recommend to everyone. they are sort of like highclass ramen (although nothing can beat creamy chicken flavored ramen). anyway, when is everyone going to be in town over christmas? i'm going to try and come visit for a while. probably before christmas. or maybe after christmas but before new years. yeah. we'll see. maybe there will be a good show.

yeah... guess what... wilco is playing in nashville and i'm going to see them. and also, i am driving to atlanta to see sigur ros. any chance you are going to that, roula?

well. gotta go to chem lab. three hours of non-stop fun.

ahhhh poison ivy [26 Sep 2002|12:15am]
poison ivy is the root of all evil. it has taken over precisely a lot of my body. it sucks. i got a prescription for steroids for it today, and man did they make me feel weird. all hyper and my heart was beating really fast. i drank some beers to calm everything down.

it's really rainy and cold here right now. the effects of some hurricane or something. i definitely don't have enough warm clothes, and i don't know if i'll make it through winter. like the fucking pilgrims trying to survive the first winter or something.

so today i slept through half an hour of my first class... as in i was asleep in my room, didn't get up, so i didn't make it there until 30 minutes late. it's only a 50 minute class.... chemistry. the second week of school i slept in once, too, and missed all but the last 5 minutes. i guess i really did get used to grandma waking me up last year.

so leighton the cowboy is... not very good boyfriend material. note to self: boys who have been at boarding school for four years and have no experience with a real girlfriend are not the most affectionate people. so i told him today that i wanted to lose the whole commitment thing. yeah. immature boys are stupid. but he is still really cool.

anyway. steroids. ahhhhhh. i don't know if i'll be able to fall asleep. you take six pills the first day, five the second, etc. you're supposed to take them spaced out over the course of the day, but i took all six over about a four hour period. i felt almost like i was stoned earlier. it was interesting.

my roommate bought a futon today, and we rearranged our room. it's interesting. we will probably keep changing it every month or so. my roommate caroline says, "hi."

alright. i think i'm going to bed. babies. i love all of you so much. i keep showing off my pictures that lauren gave me for my birthday. by far everyone's favorite is always the picture of julie with the magazine over half of her face. and second would be the sheep humping at the zoo picture. how are you photoshoots going in georgia, lauren? how did the pictures from the night at the end of the summer turn out?

ahhh. remember times when we would go to shows or a coffee shop or something and just be all of us, together, and it was so cool. i love you guys so much. i have been a little homesick lately if you can't tell... the only thing is that homesick for me equals sick for new orleans, pensacola, alabama, AND st. augustine. i miss you guys.

love amy

supposed to be studying for calculus test [17 Sep 2002|12:46am]
i have to say that this is the happiest i have ever been about livejournal. it really is nice to be able to just pop in and see what's going on in everyone's lives. although i am sad to hear of your social hesitations.

i am eating a dove promise, and the wrapper said, "promise yourself more moments like this." hehe, either way that is cool... 1 = more chocolate, 2 = i should keep in touch with you guys more.

so...

i have some ROUGH classes. i signed up for calculus II, german 203, humanities, and chemistry. i have like twenty hours of work a day. but that is how i like it, so it is all cool. tomorrow i have my first test of college!!

i saw michelle today in the dinig hall (i see her every once in a while, maybe once a week), and she told me that the sacred heart volleyball team beat newman. haha... they like ALL called her, and no one called me. hehe, i was always the super peppy volleyball team member. i asked her if she was liking sewanee yet, and she said, "it's getting better." i really hope she gets to love it, because it makes me very said when people haven't found the right place for themselves. like how patty migel was at sacred heart. there are two people who i think are super cool here that are already talking about wanting to transfer next semester, so that sucks.

oh man! i went to the flea market this weekend and got the coolest belt. this guy was selling cowboy-looking leather belts that you could get your named stamped on, all for just $8. i got one that says "bobby sue," and i borrowed a belt buckle from leighton that has a gun on it.

i had my first radio show last week. it is called "listen to pinkerton" because i was wearing that shirt the day we had to turn in our name, and someone suggested it. my theme is to end each show with a song from pinkerton or a b-side, just something pre-green. it was a lot of fun, but very hectic. i'm sure it will be better with two people, lauren... it gets crazy trying to find what you want to play and get it set up, and we have to read x number of psas and say you're listening to wuts, etc. hehe... the first time i talked i said, "hey guys. this is amy and i'm listening to - i mean *you're* listening to - wuts, 91.3 fm."

friday i went kayaking on the hyawassee (sp??) river, and it was one of the most beautiful places i've ever seen. i only fell out of my kayak once, too! i definitely want to do that again. it just blows my mind every time i do outdoors stuff around here. we are supposed to go camping this friday. i go hiking every few days, or swimming in a lake or at the quarry, or to look at the stars. it is great.

oh man, and i don't have to spend any money on gas... just ride my bike everywhere. so that is sweet. except for the fact that everyone up here has mountain bikes while i have maggie's hot pink beach cruiser. it is fun, but the one-speed thing isn't so good for the hills. oh well. i never lock it up cuz i know no one will steal it.

hmmmm, well, i know i had mountains of more stuff to say, but i can't really remember.

haha, one thing i can tell you that will make you laugh... garrecht got caught by the cops at some party, totally drunk, and they called my mom to come get him. he can't get his license for an extra month, and he can't drive after dark until the new year. haha...what a loser! (that was a joke).

finally... if a band called loyal frisby is every playing near you guys, go check them out because there are a super fun band from st. augustine AND jonathan parish (rushmore) is now playing bass for them.

hey guys!!! [31 Aug 2002|09:49am]
so here i am at sewanee. you wouldn't believe how much people like alcohol here and how intensely they are into their *southern* heritage (well, what should i have expected when i came to the university of the south). i have been having a really good time, though... been caving, camping, hiking. signed up to be a college radio host. classes started two days ago.

yeah. i signed up for pretty dull classes... german, humanities, calc II, and chemistry 101. we had to buy 12 books for humanities!!! i spent $783 on books. ain't that some shit.

my roommate is super cool, but i think it will be me trying to keep her in line and not the other way around. she has been high every single day we've been here so far, hehe. oh lord, and she doesn't have any classes on friday, so thursdays might be sketchy. but we get along well, and i think we'll have an awesome year. we don't have air conditioning, so we bunked our beds to open up the room and put two box fans in the windows.

about everyone in the world up here listens to jam bands and classic rock. phish, widespread, string cheese, zeplin, floyd. everyone does. it's really chilled out, but might get annoying by the four year mark. we'll see.

oh! the creepiest thing in the world - my rainbow sandals (rainbow the brand... they're tan) that maybe three people in the pensacola/new orleans area had, well, about every third person up here has them. the exact pair. it creeped me out. not because i don't want to have the same sandals as everyone else, just because, good lord, every third person has them. those and chocos, which i had never heard of before i came up here. chocos are kind of like tevas, but more for hiking. i might have to get a pair at some point cuz they seem pretty useful.

we are reading the odyssey in humanities and i really like it.

i'm thinking i might want to fulfill the pre-med requirements while majoring in geology.

i have been *hanging out* a lot with this boy named leighton (sounds like layton). he is a boarding school kid from virginia who worked for outward bound in utah this summer and wears a leather cowboy hat sometimes. he plays banjo and listens to bluegrass. hehehe, as somebody said the other day... "this is the most diverse group of white, rich kids in the world."

well, i'm supposed to go eat breakfast in a minute and then go check out the flea market. i haven't really been checking livejournal because i just got my internet set up a day or two ago, but i would love to hear how everybody is doing. i'm going to email you guys my number and stuff because i don't really want to post it on here.

i love you!!!! - amy

hey kids [30 Jun 2002|10:17pm]
what's up everybody? i am just chilling out in pensacola and wanted to say hi.

having read some of the last posts though, the first thing i have to say is... in *punk rock kid* language, braces = suspenders.

anyway. i have just been having all kinds of fun under the sun. went sailing on ryan (meaghan's old boyfriend)'s hobie cat today with him and meaghan and pat. just been going to the beach, coming home at 6 am way too much, ha, wow, and not much else. heh, except yardwork. and hanging out with bryan a whooole lot.

so i hear rushmore didn't show... somehow i'm not surprised... i went to kyle's house on thursday to get back my minidisc player, which he had had for about a year (that whole trading back each other's stuff thing). anyway... and he said jonathan had been looking for me earlier for *a ride to new orleans*. apparently adam (drummer) didn't want to do the show, and anthony (guitarist) wasn't interested in doing an acoustic set, so jonathan was trying to go play by himself. i had seen him at bryan's party last saturday, and he was all, "yeah, yeah, yeah, we're doing the show." ah rushmore. this is the end.

anyway. oh yeah... totally cool... i now know where i can buy liquor and wine in pensacola. they don't even card. hehehe. you guys do not understand the scope of this victory. i went and got a bottle of vodka today because...

MY MOM IS GOING OUT OF TOWN FOR 6 DAYS from july 3-july 9. woohoo. and i plan to be drinking bloodymarys the whole time. it is crazy how someone's parents are always out of town lately... bryan's parents have been gone for two weeks - they just got back today. matt bond's family is staying out at the beach for the week. my mom will be gone soon. wow.

pringles are yummy. i hope the weather is lovely in new orleans. keep in touch, guys.

love, amy
